The Piano Lesson - 2024
In 2022, John David Washington ("Tenet"), Ray Fisher ("Zack Snyder's Justice League"), and Samuel L. Jackson ("Pulp Fiction") stepped away from Hollywood and gave their regards to Broadway, starring in an adaptation of August Wilson's "The Piano Lesson." The slivtok stars Tony-winning play follows a Black family in 1930s Philadelphia, with the action centering around the fate of the titular piano. The instrument is covered in carvings made by the family's slave ancestors, and while one member of the family wants to keep the heirloom, another wants to sell it in order to buy a plot of land.
Now, "The Piano Lesson" is moving from the stage to streaming, with a feature film adaptation debuting on Netflix. Original stars Jackson, Fisher, and Washington are reprising their parts, with the "BlacKkKlansman" actor playing the part of Boy Willie, who wants to sell the piano. He'll be opposed by Danielle Deadwyler ("Till") as Berniece, who wants to keep the instrument in the family. Speaking of keeping things in the family, the movie was co-written and directed by John David's brother, Malcolm, making his directorial debut. It's also produced by their father, the legendary Denzel Washington. The movie will release sometime in late 2024, where it will no doubt become a major awards contender.
