При перевозке электроэнергии от электростанции к домашним хозяйствам подстанция действует как перекресток, где сталкиваются разнообразные дороги. Подстанции делят электричество в сети и изменяют его напряжение. Линии нашей гальванической сети объединяются в подстанцию, через которую электроток от электрических станций, где оно генерируется, достигает потребителей.

Солнечная энергия, генеримая фотоэлектрическими конструкциями на крышах помещений и подаваемая в сеть, дополнительно проходит через станции. Электричество в основополагающем транспортируется на довольно большие расстояния, как например, от ветряных турбин на севере до полуденных зон. На своем пути ток течет с многообразными уровнями напряжения тока на многих станциях: он имеет крайне высокое напряжение на межрегиональных линиях, гальванические магистрали на огромные расстояния и невысокое напряжение на коротких расстояниях, к примеру, в городе. Отличное напряжение может использоваться для того, чтобы весьма снизить потери энергии при перевозке на довольно большие расстояния.

Сам преобразователь состоит из нескольких электрических изолированных катушек, проделанных из медного или дюралевого провода, которые намотаны вокруг стального сердечника. Когда поступающий ток протекает через первую катушку, внутри трансформатора создается электромагнитное поле, которое генерит поток тока с более невысоким напряжением во второй катушке. Катушка изолирована целлюлозой, которая обмотана вокруг провода и пропитана специфическим изоляционным маслом.
